    custom made dual stage foams......

here's what i did to stuff my rovers....i needed foams to fill my rovers and didn't have the bucks for a new set of 2 stage foams, so i made my own....started with the set of stock grey foams that came with the rovers we all know are too small....i bought a set of four 16" x 16" x 1" foam seat cushions from wally world....

cut them in strips the same width as the tires foam....

the 16" length of the seat cushions come in are perfect size to go around the grey tire foam....

here is the foam behind the tire it will go in, you can see it will fill the tire fully....

i used some contact spray glue to glue them together and now i have a set of custom 2 stage foams that only cost 4.00 bucks in foam....

tire with foam againest tire without foam and tire side view with foam....

with these foams at the last comp was in, i see i need to add weight back in my rear wheels or cut down the stock foams 1/4" so the tires are not so over stuffed with foam....each 16" x 16" foam sheet does 4 tires plus 2 strips left over, so i have enough foam to do 6 sets of tires..................bob

I like your work. How do these stack up against the Pro-Line or Crawler Inovations?

Ok, I need clarification. What does the dual stage foam get you? Is the center harder that the outer, or the other way aroaund?

Re: custom made dual stage foams......

proline uses memory foam in there 2 stage foams i think....i had cougars with memory foam and didn't like them and they let my wheels hit the rocks when side hilling from the tire fold over....then i went to rovers and the stock foam wasn't big enough to fill the tires, i could still push the tire bout an 1/8" in before it touched the stock gray foam the rovers came with....the foam from wal mart isn't memory foam but is just as soft as memory foam but isn't affected by the cold....but without going to scranton area to jo-ann's fabric store to get 1/2" thick foam if possible, i found those foams in wal mart....but with the new rovers i think they were a bit to much filled then, but as the tires are breaking in and i cut the lugs "sipe" they are working better now....i haven't even cleaned them with simple green yet....i have the set of stock axial grey foams i used in my cougars i'm gonna cut off a 1/4" from the outside and use the full 1" foam from wal mart and see how they work....plus when i get my hot wire foam cutter made i'll trim off 1/4" off the dual stage foams i made....that way i'll have two sets of dual stage foams, one with a full 1" white foam for more tread bite and one set with trimmed down white foam for more side wall support and full grey foams..............bob

Ok, to sum up you are not a fan of memory foam and the foam that came with them was too small of a diameter to allow for proper support. The concept of dual stage foam does not necessarely have anything to do with having two different material with different densities. So far I am happy with my star cut memory foams in the Proline Hammers. This seems intersteing and something that would be cheap to try. Did I get the idea correct?

Re: custom made dual stage foams......

The 2 stage foams main objective is to have a nice n soft contact patch, but firm enough to not roll over on itself side hilling. That's the point of the firm inner (no roll over) and soft outer (soft contact). I have the Pro-Line 2 stage memory foams and absolutely love them. I've had quite a few setups and haven't found anything that works better. The temperature only affects them when it's below 65 degrees, and to be honest, it doesn't even affect them that much. Mine are stuffed in white Rovers up from and blue Rovers in the rear. It allows them to conform to edges perfectly and side hilling is just perfect.
