A BEC allows you two things. One is a constant voltage and the other is a voltage that can be lower than your battery. The circuit converts your battery voltage into a lower voltage and some are programmable. This voltage stays steady even as the voltage drops in the battery. Obviously if the voltage gets lower than what it is producing then it will also drop. They were designed to eliminate the need for a second battery. Thus the name. We use them to avoid glitches due to high amp drawing servos. Your ESC should have one built in. The problem is it is typically not very robust and your servo will suffer.

There is much more but this is the general idea. For me I run a 11.1v battery and run my BEC at 6.1v. This is about 1 volt higher than most ESC BECs.
